Xiaomi Mi 4 event invite

It has been seven months since Xiaomi Mi 3 was released in China, and just two months since its was on sale in Malaysia, but its successor will soon be announced. Xiaomi has sent out an invitation for its annual product launch event that will be held on July 22nd. The invite packaging contains what appears to be a metal plate that may resemble the back of Xiaomi Mi 4, the very phone that will be announced during this event.

Lei Jun, Co-founder, Chairman, and CEO of Xiaomi Tech, has been found teasing on his Weibo account earlier with an image of a large number ‘4’ on a brushed metallic background. The tagline beneath the number reads, “the journey of a piece of steel metal.”

Shortly after, there has been many other image leaks of the purported phone since, with the latest one [Chinese] giving us a clearer picture of how the device looks like.

The rumored specifications from various sources are still contradictory. While some are saying it’ll have a Grade 204 stainless steel, the company’s VP purportedly admitted that the back cover is actually not metallic.

The display is looking to be 5.5 inches in size, but it is still up in the air whether it’s 1080p or 2K in resolution. It is most likely to be running on a 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 chipset with Adreno 420 GPU and 3GB RAM. The device will be powered by a 3050mAh battery.

Some are saying it’ll have 16GB on-board storage, while others claim that a 32GB ROM will come standard. Some even went all the way to claim that the Mi 4 will have a microSD card slot. Mi 4’s camera resolution isn’t any clearer either. It will either have a 13- or 16-megapixel main camera, with an 8-megapixel front-facing camera.

However, what’s certain is that Mi 4 will be supporting 4G LTE, with other expected connectivity in tow, like 5GHz dual-band WiFi, A-GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, FM radio, and NFC. It will ship with MIUI V6 that’s based on Android 4.4 KitKat.

In any case, we will find out soon enough when Xiaomi does announce its Mi 4 smartphone on July 22nd. If anything, this leaves us to wonder what will happen to the fabled Mi 3S; will Xiaomi decide to scrap this device entirely in favor of the sexier Mi 4?
