Last year I remember I said that the then-recently-announced Xiaomi Mi Note will be replacing the Redmi Note line. I was clearly wrong, since the Redmi Note 2 and now Redmi Note 3 have been announced. I think Xiaomi foresaw that as it releases more and more premium smartphones, it risks widening the gap between its flagships and its low-end Redmi phones. The then-flagship Mi 3 and the flagship-ish Mi 4i were priced below RM1,000, and the new Mi 5 could easily cost more than that. Mi 5 is one of the most feature-complete flagships yet, with everything packed-in including IR blaster, NFC, and OIS, with only a few left out like microSD, water-resistance, wireless charging, and WQHD display. Surely some of the specifications can be shaved off to reduce the cost, right? This is where the Mi 4S comes in. It was announced just moments before Xiaomi took the wraps of the Mi 5, of which the latter stole all the attention, but the Mi 4S does hold its own. While it is still unclear whether or not Mi Malaysia will bring this device to Malaysia, DirectD is already selling the Mi 4S in White for RM1,399, and in Gold for RM1,449. In China, the phone went on sale on March 1st for RMB1,699 (~RM1067.86), and it comes in Black, Gold, Lilac, and White.
Though the Mi 4S is a step below the Mi 5, it is also a small step above the Mi 4c (Mi 4c is available from DirectD too). Most of the specifications are the same on both Mi 4S and Mi 4c (like the Snapdragon 808 chip, for instance), except four major differences, namely Mi 4S’ design, larger battery, larger storage, and the inclusion of a microSD card slot. Mi 4S bucks the trend as microSD slots are usually missing from higher-end Xiaomi devices, so this is a much-welcomed feature. The battery is a 3260mAh lithium-ion and the phone now comes with a 3GB memory plus a 64GB storage. It is also more attractive than its predecessors, with front and back glass panels sandwiching the 3D arc magnesium alloy frame. The back of the Black and White models are solid in color, but the Gold and Lilac versions also have a cross stitch pattern. The fingerprint sensor is also placed at the back (like Redmi Note 3), and it is secured by the ARM TrustZone technology.

Let’s go through some of its strengths. Right off the bat, it has an IR blaster, just like the Mi 4c. It does 4G LTE-A Cat9 with a top speed of 450Mbps downloads. The WiFi is not too shabby either, supporting dual-band (2.4 and 5 GHz), 802.11ac, and MU-MIMO with dual antennas. Its 3260mAh battery is charged through a USB Type-C port, but don’t forget it also does Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 (9V/1.2A), that can recharge the device by 40% in an hour. One major annoyance is that, just like many Chinese smartphones these days, it doesn’t have an NFC chip.
The other two features — display and camera — are what you’d expect. It’s 5-inch 1080p display has up to 95% NTSC color gamut, with the Sunlight Display mode and color temperature adjustment support. No details on whether or not it’s using a Gorilla Glass (for both front and back). As for the camera, at the back, it’s a 13-megapixel f/2.0 type with phase detection autofocus (PDAF) and a dual-tone LED flash, while the front is a 5-megapixel f/2.0 type with an 85-degree wide-angle lens. By the numbers, the original Mi 4 seems to have better specifications, as its 13- and 8-megapixel rear and front cameras both have an aperture of f/1.8.
