All these Mi 5 teasers by Xiaomi is making me restless and I need to distract myself with another Xiaomi device we cannot buy here yet. Xiaomi’s Redmi line has always been on the lowest-end of the spectrum, with its killer feature being the price. But on January 11th, Xiaomi Redmi 3 was unveiled and not only does it retains the low price point, it has also bumped up the specifications, to include a massive 4100mAh battery. It went on sale in China on January 12th for RMB699, which converts to just RM448.73.
The 4100mAh battery is said to also have an increased density of 685Wh/L, which apparently could deliver 80% longer talk time compared to Redmi 2. But wait, there’s more. With a battery capacity that large, you’d appreciate the 5V/2A fast charging it supports too. Redmi 3 ships with the new MIUI 7 skin that has its own optimizations on the software side, to extend the battery life by up to another 25%.
One of the other upgrades include a prettier design than its predecessors; it now has a full metal body and a lattice design, made up of “4166 stars woven together” to form a diamond-shaped pattern. The display size has been increased to 5 inches with a 720p resolution, while maintaining a 8.5mm profile and a 144 gram weight, which may not be very slim or light, but keep in mind the monster battery is has to enclose.
Even the Snapdragon 616 processor is decent here, considering the price you are paying for. It also has a 13-megapixel, f/2.0 main camera with phase detection autofocus (PDAF). On a sub-RM500 phone. Redmi 3 supports two SIM cards, with the SIM 2 slot accepting microSDs up to 128GB.
Xiaomi Redmi 3 is available in three colors — Gold, Gray, and Silver, for RMB699 (around RM448.73 as mentioned earlier). It is likely the company will release it in Malaysia too, but we’ll have to wait a few months for that. Until then, the following are some of the key specifications of the device (which you also can read more here, if you understand Chinese):
- 5-inch 720p HD display
- Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 processor
- 2GB RAM
- 16GB internal storage with microSD card slot (up to 128GB in size)
