Xiaomi Pistons 3.0

Xiaomi has always been full of surprises, with smartphone announcements all year round, including the recently-unveiled Mi 4c. Malaysia was not left out too, as the local division of Xiaomi announced last week that its brand-new Mi In-Ear Headphones are now available for purchase officially over at Mi.com/my, for RM69. This new Mi In-Ear Headphones are also affectionately known as Pistons 3.0, and it is the successor to the popular headphones with the same name (also known as Pistons 2.1), that was at RM50 but is no longer available at Mi.com/my.

This all-new Pistons 3 use “aerospace-grade” metal diaphragms with a patented “sandwich” design, where the diaphragm is sandwiched by two PET (polyethylene terephthalate) materials, all of which sits on top of the N48 permanent magnet. The setup promises to deliver great treble sound from metal, while improving richness in the mid and bass ranges. Also improved, is its third generation damping plus separate output channel and output hole in the front cavity to provide a balanced sound. Xiaomi also patented the sound chamber that incorporates spiral airflow channels and has extended the bass output holes too. All these hardware is then professionally-tuned by Xiaomi, which also touts that its Pistons 3 outperform the Sennheiser CX985 and Urbeats on the distortion curve, meaning you can hear more detail with less distortion.

This winner of the 2015 Red Dot Design Award is a complete departure from Pistons 2’s design, where Pistons 3 now has a more understated elegance (an all-black look with metallic gray accents) than Pistons 2’s striking look (black with metallic gold-accented housings and in-line controller). Not only are the new Pistons more streamlined in design, they are also more ergonomic. From the top, the earbuds are angled 120 degrees outwards, and from the side view, 70 degrees downwards. Couple that with its three-size silicone interchangeable earbuds (XS/S/L), it aims to fit every unique ear hole, while offering a comfortable and ergonomic fit.

Xiaomi Pistons 3.0 in-line controller

Even though they don’t come in gold, it still retains the brushed, anodized aluminum accents on the housings, on the in-line controller, and on the 3.5mm plug. Speaking of the in-line controller, it is no longer placed at the intersection where the main cord splits to the two earbud cables, and also no longer have the awkward button placements. Piston 3’s in-line controller are along the Right side of the earbud cable, with all three buttons (volume down, play/pause, and volume up) arranged on the same side. A built-in Knowles MEMS microphone can be found on the back side of the controller.

The bottom section of the cord is still made out of a braided fabric sleeve (that prevents tangling), enclosing its Kevlar fibers and enameled copper wires. The end sections are also sheathed in TPE (thermoplastic elastomers) to prevent the “stethoscope effect” (also known as microphonics), which is that annoying rustling sound you get when the cable rubs on your clothes.

The all-new Xiaomi In-Ear Headphones (Pistons 3.0) have been available for purchase in Malaysia since September 29th. It is still in stock at the time of writing, for RM69 a pair. Visit http://www.mi.com/my/headphones3/ for more information.
