In a short Facebook post, Xiaomi Malaysia announced that the Redmi 1S will be on sale for the last time in Malaysia on October 21st, probably at the usual 12pm time.
The discontinuation could be partly due to the slowing down of sales (by Xiaomi’s standards), causing the company to even partner with other online retailers like Lazada to clear out the stocks. At RM419, it is also just RM90 less than its larger sibling, the Redmi Note, that has a larger display, larger battery, double the RAM, and a higher-resolution camera.
The Redmi 1S still has a lot going for it; its 4.7-inch display is denser than the Redmi Note’s. While not the latest 4.4 KitKat, Redmi 1S has a newer OS — 4.3 Jelly Bean, while Redmi Note is still stuck at version 4.2.2; not that it matters since they’re heavily skinned with MIUI V5.
It had a good run, having only been released in the Malaysian market for less than four months. What’s replacing it will be more interesting. Will the Redmi Note be lowered to the RM419 price tag? Will we soon see the 4G version of Redmi Note locally? And when will we see the arrival of the Mi Pad and Mi 4? Only time will tell.
