Forget the highly anticipated Mi 3. During the launch event today, Hugo Barra, Vice President of Xiaomi Global also announced that the low-cost Redmi 1S will be coming to Malaysia next month, or June 2014.
Redmi 1S is not to be mistaken with the original Redmi that is on sale in Singapore now. The ‘1S’ denotes an ‘upgraded’ 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor, compared with its predecessor’s MediaTek MT6589T processor, which also has a quad-core 1.5GHz CPU.

Even though the RAM/memory remains the same at 1GB, the internal storage has also been bumped from 4GB on the Redmi, to 8GB on the Redmi 1S.
Much of everything else — including the design — remains the same. Supporting dual SIM cards, it has a 4.7-inch IPS display at 1280 x 720 resolution, a 8MP BSI camera at f/2.2 aperture, accompanied by a dual-LED flash, and a 1.3MP front camera.

It is worth pointing out that the 2000mAh battery is also user-removable, not to mention it takes microSD cards. While no LTE support here, this WCDMA phone does work with our Malaysian 3G network. Other features include A-GPS, Bluetooth 3.0, and Wi-Fi.
Xiaomi Redmi 1S ships with MIUI V5 that’s based on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. The 4.4 KitKat build is said to be rolling out in about a month and a half to the Mi 3, but no word on when the Redmi will get the update.
While the Malaysian retail price has yet to be revealed, Xiaomi reassures us that it usually doesn’t go too far off the original price in China, which is ¥799 (~RM411.56).
